Migration in numbers: Juncker says he’s done the maths, but do his sums add up?

During his first State of the Union address, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker called on EU countries to jointly host 160,000 refugees fleeing conflict in Syria and elsewhere. Whilst Germany welcomes the proposals, its neighbours are far more sceptical. The Czech Republic’s refusing to accept compulsory quotas and Slovakia’s stated only Christian refugees will be welcome. Disunity among member states is just one of the hurdles facing Juncker. As Ellie Mears reports, the proposed quotas only cover a fraction of people expected on Europe’s shores in the coming months. Juncker says he’s done the maths, but do his sums add up?
