Juncker’s State of the Union in 5 minutes
On Wednesday 9th September Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker used his first ever State of the Union address to set out radical plans for tackling the refugee crisis. Under his proposals, 160,000 refugees arriving in Italy, Greece and Hungary would be distributed across all member states (except the UK, Ireland and Denmark which are exempt from EU asylum policy). Juncker also called for a 1.8bn Euro trust fund to help potential African migrants find jobs and stability in their own countries, and said asylum seekers should have the right to work while their applications are being processed.
The mammoth 72-minute speech also touched on:
- the Greek crisis
- Securing a fair deal for the UK to avoid a potential Brexit
- Transparency in negotiations over the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP)
- Solidarity with Ukraine
- Climate change
