In Focus: Farmers march on Brussels

On 7th September, 5,000 farmers from across Europe took to the streets of Brussels to protest about falling dairy and meat prices. The march was planned to coincide with an emergency meeting of agriculture ministers from the EU’s member states, who had gathered to discuss the crisis in the farming industry.

The demonstrators’ demands include early direct payments to help farmers with their liquidity problems; a fund directed at marketing agricultural products outside the EU; a review of the intervention price at which farmers can sell their stock to the EU; and mechanisms to stabilise the price of milk and pork. Some are also calling for temporary milk quotas to be reintroduced: a move they say will reduce supply and bring up prices.

In order to mitigate the crisis, the European Commission announced a comprehensive support package worth €500 million.
