Brussels Briefing on Transport – All you need to know for September 2015

In this Brussels Briefing on Transport, leading journalist Dave Keating provides an overview of the latest EU transport policy developments:

  • Following last month’s tragic attacks on a Thalys, the European Commission and transport ministers are reviewing security for cross-border land transport. The review could recommend introducing airport-style security screening at train stations.
  • A Meeting of Ministers for Transport next month in Luxembourg will discuss this issue. They will also discuss the recent re-imposition of border checks at EU internal borders, a possible violation of the Schengen Agreement.
  • Whilst the TRAN Committee is still working on negotiating the fourth Railway Package with EU Member States, it has, however adopted a resolution on sustainable urban mobility that reflects the EU’s ambition to eliminate traditional combustion engines from EU city centres by 2050.
  • The European Commission is expected to adopt its EU aviation strategy by the end of the year.
