Brussels Briefing on Energy – All you need to know for October-November 2015

Just under a month before the Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič’s State of the Energy Union address on 18 November, EU energy policymakers have a lot on their plates. The Commission has signed a €300 million grant agreement on a gas pipeline between Poland and Lithuania, and it’s set to publish its strategy on liquefied natural gas early next year.

Energy journalist Hughes Belin reports that a consultation on redesigning the electricity market is now over. The Commission’s also cleared British plans to charge nuclear plants, rather than consumers, for the safe disposal of nuclear waste.

Commissioners have postponed a paper on the new illustrative nuclear programme (PINC) until early 2016, and launched a platform for cooperation on regional electricity markets in the Mediterranean. On 27 November, the EU and Norway are holding a conference on energy cooperation.
