Car Crashes into Barriers before British Parliament, People Injured in Possible Terrorist Attack

A number of people have been injured as a car crashed into security barriers before the House of Parliament in the British capital London in what appeared deliberate action on part of the driver, and might turn out to be a terrorist attack.

The incident in central London occurred shortly after 7:30 am local time, and is reminiscent of a number of recent terrorist attacks in Western European countries with vehicles plowed into pedestrians.

Immediately after the crash the car was surrounded by police officer on duty who arrested the driver, the BBC reports.

Cyclists are reported to have been hit but police do not believe anybody is in a life-threatening condition.

Scotland Yard could not say immediately if the incident before the British Parliament is related to terrorism.

However, a number of eye witnesses have said the car appeared to deliberately hit members of the public.

The car crashing incident led the police to seal off the Westminster subway station and streets around Millbank, Parliament Square and Victoria Tower Gardens.

The police put up a Terrorism Act cordon, officers at the scene said. The British Parliament is currently not sitting.

According to an eyewitness, the driver was travelling westbound past the Houses of Parliament when the car swerved into eastbound traffic.

The driver is said to have deliberately hit cyclists queuing at traffic lights to enter Parliament Square.

The car then swerved back across the road and hit the crash barrier next to the parking area outside the House of Lords.

Paramedics were treating a small group of people sitting on the ground outside the Palace of Westminster.

More than 10 police vehicles and at least three ambulances remain outside Parliament. Firearms officers and at least two police dogs are stationed inside Parliament Square.

“At 07:37hrs today, a car was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament. The male driver of the car was detained by officers at the scene. A number of pedestrians have been injured. Officers remain at the scene. We will issue further info when we have it,” Scotland Yard said.

The British Houses of Parliament are surrounded with security barriers of steel and concrete.

The measures were extended after the Westminster Bridge attack in March 2017 when Khalid Masood, a British national, ploughed a car into crowds on Westminster Bridge, killing four people.
