Sweden Braces for Possible Russian Attack

Sweden doesn’t want to take chances for a possible war and is now preparing for Russia’s attack.

Preparing for the Looming War in Sweden

After invading Ukraine, it’s possible that Sweden would be the next target of Russia’s invasion.

The Swedish government is enforcing interactive measures to guide its citizens in the dreadful possible war. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency updated its public safety booklet with essential information on handling a probable war scenario.

The revised booklet is a practical survival guide when there are no societal amenities. It denotes the individual’s role in the country’s defence system. Moreover, it epitomises necessary actions during an armed attack.

Leading security individuals, Commander-in-Chief Micael Bydén, and Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin believe Russia is targeting Sweden. They requested heightened resilience, particularly among civilians as Sweden will join NATO this year.

Bohlin worries about the country’s civil defence modernisation systems that weren’t fast enough. He persuaded the public to take measures. According to Bohlin, Sweden could be at war soon and their perception must be conveyed into practical operation.

“On an individual level, you have to prepare yourself mentally. This is a very serious situation, and the clarity yesterday was unmistakable. It is now about moving from words and understanding to action,” said Bydén.

Currently, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is assisting crucial entities and war-critical authorities in establishing wartime organisations.

Defence System

The country’s move is part of a wider defence strategy to boost defence spending and bolster the nation’s military capabilities. It encompasses a detailed plan for acquiring sufficient supplies to last for a week or two. Citizens must likewise have enough cash and copies of important documents. They also have the option to stay in Sweden or return to their home countries.

Moreover, the guidance booklet, emphasises the urgency for immigrants to account for their unique circumstances and provides rational tips for emergency readiness.

Moscow’s Response to Stockholm’s Battle-Ready Warning

Moscow responded to Stockholm’s warning to its citizens to become mentally prepared for a possible war. Russian Senator Aleksey Pushkov retaliated at Sweden’s Commander-in-Chief Byden’s precaution, describing it as “anti-Russian paranoia.”

Pushkov added that Bohlin’s notices for war are absurd. However, it’s the same response that Moscow made against Kyiv and the West before Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

“Apparently, this is how they try to give Sweden a geopolitical importance that it does not have. Sometimes it seems that some Swedish military personnel, as well as journalists, are almost dreaming of war,” Pushkov said.

Sweden has never been involved in a war conflict since a short war with Norway in 1814 when the latter petitioned to have its own constitution and parliament.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on the other hand,  flagged that Putin won’t cease at Ukraine. He added that Russia would attack other neighbouring countries except if allies would join forces to immobilise him.
