Boston Scientific Announces €100 Million Expansion in Ireland

Boston Scientific, a global leader in the development and manufacture of medical devices, has announced details of a new €100 million expansion of its operations in County Galway, on Ireland’s west coast. The expansion is expected to enable 300+ jobs in the coming years and includes over 40,000 square feet of medical device manufacturing space that will be powered by renewable energy.

The expanded site will include a carbon neutral manufacturing space in alignment with the company’s goal to achieve carbon neutrality in all manufacturing and key distribution sites by 2030.

Boston Scientific employs 38,000 people internationally operating in 40 countries. It employs 6,500 in Ireland across three sites, making it the largest life sciences employer in the country.

According to IDA Ireland, the public body responsible for international investment in Ireland, Boston Scientific has had a presence in Galway since 1994 and has expanded site capabilities to include advanced product design, R&D and manufacturing.

More than four million medical devices are exported from the Galway facility every year, including heart stents and valves, vascular balloons and oesophageal stents. These products help treat patients with conditions including heart disease, vascular disease, oesophageal cancer, and those at risk of stroke.

Commenting on the announcement, CEO of IDA Ireland, Martin Shanahan said, “Today, Ireland has the highest per capita number of people employed in the European medical device industry. Boston Scientific is one of the leading global MedTech companies choosing to grow in Ireland and contribute to a vibrant industry sector, which has a key role to play in tackling the world’s biggest healthcare challenges.”

Vice President of Operations at Boston Scientific, James Lyons said, “This expansion reflects the important contributions of our workforce here in Galway and the strength of the broader business and local community in the west region.”

In June 2019, Boston Scientific announced a €60 million investment in a new facility, also in County Galway. The expansion was to facilitate increased capacity to support global product demand and also included an industry-leading Equipment Technology Centre. The investment was made to coincide with celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the company first establishing a presence in Galway.
