Restrictive abortion law in Spain would raise backstreet abortion, argues GUE/NGL
Jennifer Baker is joined by David Lundy, press officer for the GUE/NGL Group, to discuss the proposal for restricted abortion law in Spain.
The new abortion law proposed by Spain’s conservatives suggests that women could only have an abortion in case of rape, threat to the mother’s health or if the pregnancy includes a fetal deformity. The Spanish proposal caused a heated debate in the European Parliament. “If implemented, this abortion law would raise illegal backstreet abortion and would put women’s health in danger“, argues GUE/NGL press officer David Lundy.
Last week MEPs launched a petition against the new Spanish abortion law and staged protests in Strasbourg.
