“Intellectual Property should keep up with modern developments”, asserts Commissioner Barnier
European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, Michel Barnier, shares his thoughts on Intellectual Property with John Rega, Chief Correspondent MLex FS.
The Commissioner discusses Intellectual Property in relation to Media and the Creative Industry. Mr Barnier states that copyright is important as it provides the guarantee that someone’s creation will be promoted, protected and rewarded. This in return enables consumers to find new and safer products that can improve their lives. However, the Commissioner for Internal Market and Services argues that Intellectual Property should keep up with modern developments. That means adapting to the internet age and developments on the EU level.
In this light, Copyright Collecting Societies should operate in a more transparent way according to the Commissioner. In a rapidly developing world of online media, the European Union should assure there is a single market that facilitates the free movement of Intellectual Property. From this perspective, the development of a legal online offer is the way to fight against online piracy.
In any case it is important for companies, small and big, to have their inventions protected in order to avoid theft or counterfeiting. When protecting inventions, we protect the jobs that are linked to them, says Barnier.
