EU Carbon Taxation – Debate between the European Commission and France
Commission director for indirect taxation Alexander Wiedow and French Deputy Permanent Representative Philippe Leglise-Costa join Sonja van Renssen to discuss the review of the European Union’s energy taxation directive, which would introduce a carbon tax on sectors outside the EU emission trading scheme (ETS), primarily agriculture, transport and households. In this video debate they discuss, why a revision is urgent and essential, and what obstacles it faces. Subsidiarity, carbon leakage, and protection for the vulnerable emerge are the key points of debate. It also questions, if the member states are ready to seize this opportunity for a broader transition to green taxation.
