Climate Action Commissioner Hedegaard on EU Emissions Trading System
Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard on the European Union’s ETS (Emissions Trading System).
Commissiona Hedegaard begins with wholeheartedly defending the ETS, stating that ‘it is so far the best solution the world has ever seen and it does make a huge difference’. One of the debated topics in this area are the unused emission allowances, which have not been sold or distributed to industry. The Commissioner shares her idea to make use of these left-overs in an innovation accelerator, as part of which the Commission will give more to those companies, which come up with new solutions to Europe’s problems. She concludes by saying ‘we really need more innovation in Europe and we really need to reward those daring to take the first step in an innovative field’.
